Anyway, the wipes needing a color generator black strip as source or target is actually the same in any professional editing system. Wipes do not emit a picture of their own, they just tell the NLE how two video sources should be mixed. I too was concerned about the lack of actual screen frame for media in the VSE. I guess you could load a still frame of grey that runs the length of your timeline, then just edit on the tracks above. Just change the composite type per clip to check the actual size.
